(no subject)

In the last few days, I realized something. I can't read lips. Apparently this is a skill most people seem to have, but I just can't do it. You'd think I'd be able to, since I often stare at people's mouths when they talk. (Eye contact makes me very uncomfortable, and I have to force myself to do it because apparently if you don't make eye contact, other people hate it and think you're lying. So I usually just look at someone's mouth or hair when they're talking, instead of their eyes.) But I can't process the movements when they're talking, because their lips move fast, and I can't translate sight to sound in my mind. I wonder if I can train myself to read lips. I think it's something I should be able to do, since I don't process auditory things very effectively. (I remember things a lot better when they're written down. When people are talking to me, I'm trying to focus more on the whole social interaction thing than actually listening to what they're saying, so half the words quite literally go in one ear and out the other. When I'm reading, my brain isn't going "Aaaah, there's a person talking to me! What do I do?" so I can concentrate on processing the words.)

Maybe I should watch my favorite movies on mute, since I already know what they're saying and can repeat the words in my head while their lips are moving. Or I could lip-synch in front of a mirror (like my inner drag diva). Hmmm...
