Gossip is for people whose own lives are so boring and pathetic that their only entertainment is spreading rumors about others.
When I was in the CMU pre-college art program one summer, a few people in a video class did an experiment for their project. One of our classmates got in trouble for hitting a teacher (I don't remember exactly what happened, but I think the teacher broke the student's artwork, the student hit the teacher, and he got in trouble, but the situation was resolved peacefully, both parties apologized to each other, and life went on.), so the group decided to start a rumor that the student was going to be kicked out of the art program. The student was in on it, and I think a few of the art department people were too. So the people doing the project told a few people the guy was going to get kicked out, and then they went around with a video camera, interviewing random people and asking if they'd heard the rumors about this guy. They were interviewing everyone, like our classmates, the kids in the other pre-college programs, staff members, some younger kids in the dining hall who were there for soccer camp (one kid's friend pantsed him during that clip, it was hilarious), random people on campus, etc. Finally, I think the head of the program had to send out a message to everyone with the truth, or something like that. This was 9 years ago, so my memory is fuzzy, but there was this big fuss in the art department for like a week.
Also, now my coworkers think I'm even weirder, because I talk to spiders while I'm catching and freeing them.
